Title
Sexing Hamlet

Author
Peter Robinson

Synopsis
Jamie, an actor on the fringe is preparing for a production of Hamlet which he vainly believes has found the true essence of the play. Girlfriend, Antonia has helped him prepare but at this meeting she exposes the whole masculine concept behind Hamlet and the way actor/directors have simply used it as the prime vehicle to kick-start their careers. Jamie is stunned and finds out that she has been having an affair with the play’s director, Harry who has just accepted a job with a much larger theatre, effectively using the play as a stepping stone for the West End. Jamie feels betrayed but Antonia tells him she has been doing the same, hanging around with struggling actors till she can see who is going to make it. For her the theatre world is no different from the world of commerce or politics with people using it to fulfil their own ambitions. She leaves Jamie, seeing his tragedy lying in the fact that he is not just acting and using Hamlet, he is Hamlet, his conscience cannot allow him to just use the role for his own ends. View extract.
