A Terrace with Columns is a realistic play about the Hollering family, based upon the Norwegian original Terrasse med Søyler. It tells about the Hollering family, who are facing an imminent bankruptcy after a long history of living beyond their means.

As sickness and old age have caught up with the parents, each member of the family tries to deal with the situation in different ways, from the megalomanic mother, who still refuses to acknowledge the truth, to the youngest son, who under idealistic pretexts prefers risking his life as a newsreporter in the Balkans rather than coping with the dim prospects at home.

His brothers - one being a desillusioned intellectual with a taste for booze and gambling, the other a careless spendthrift in the habit of losing every job he gets - show themselves equally incapable of preventing the breaking up and downfall of the family. The only one who really makes an effort to save what is left to save, is their sister. But at what costs? As the play developes, the nature of her self-distructing heroism is revealed...
