Title Nerve and Verve
Author
Synopsis Arokolu attends a party with his cousin, Tunde, at which appears a community grandee, Chief Migu. Their hostess, Janet, is desperate to marry off her daughter Aina to Arokolu, obviously the country’s most eligible bachelor. Chief Migu passionately advocates the nation’s independence from Britain, which stance horrifies Arokolu. Then Arokolu catches sight of Celina, a fabulous woman. Arokolu’s courage and ingenuity are severely tested in his struggle to win Celina. There are violent encounters. He wins an unlikely ally in the old lady who lives in Celina’s house. He and Celina begin an affair. Celina is often unpredictable, veering between enjoyment of the affair and guilt prompted by her principles. Arokolu was embarked on a rake’s progress, but he never left Celina. She urges him into politics, and he successfully challenges Chief Migu, becoming his country’s representative in Government. Arokolu wishes to marry Celina, but she refuses, feeling that she, a divorced and advanced woman, was not a suitable bride for a young man with a brilliant future. Arokolu then becomes engaged to Janet’s daughter, Aina. On the morning of the wedding, Celina suddenly realises that she can’t let Arokolu go, and urges him to have her instead of Aina. The stakes - politically and emotionally - are staggering. Arokolu, torn between his flaring passion for Janet on the one hand, and on the other his dignity, status and integrity, is plunged into the dilemma of his life. View extract.
